How Easy Is It To Do Business With Your Company?
08/04/2026
Think about the most recent frustrating experience you had as a customer.
Perhaps you weren’t sure who to contact, and finding the right person took longer than it should have. A simple question required multiple transfers. Information had to be provided more than once. Or maybe a promised update never arrived, leaving you to wonder what was next.
Chances are, you still remember how it felt.
Not because the company failed to solve your problem.
Because they made solving it harder than it needed to be.
Your Customer Sees One Company
Customers don’t experience your business one department at a time.
They don’t separate your website from your receptionist, your sales team from your billing department, or customer service from technical support. Every interaction contributes to the impression they’re forming of your business. A frustrating experience with any one of them becomes a frustrating experience with your company.
That’s why customers don’t judge a business solely by what it sells. They judge the entire experience of doing business with it.
Prompt responses build confidence. Clear communication reduces uncertainty. Following through on a promise reinforces trust. Delays, confusing processes, and unnecessary obstacles have the opposite effect. Even when the product or service meets expectations, a difficult experience can leave customers questioning whether they want to do business with you again.
Customers Remember How You Made Them Feel
Most customers expect a product or service to perform as promised. What they don’t expect is to struggle getting answers, chase updates, repeat information, or navigate unnecessary obstacles along the way.
Those moments shape more than the transaction. They shape perception.
Customers begin asking themselves questions they may never say out loud. If it’s this difficult before the sale, what will happen afterward? If communication is inconsistent now, will it be any better when I need help?
Trust is built through dozens of small interactions, not one grand gesture. Likewise, confidence can be weakened by small frustrations that seem insignificant inside the business but feel very different to the customer.
By the time a customer compares pricing, capabilities, or expertise, they’ve often already formed an opinion about what it will be like to do business with your company.
Every Process Shapes the Experience
Every business has processes. Most were created for good reasons. They help maintain consistency, reduce mistakes, and improve efficiency.
The challenge begins when those processes become more convenient for the business than they are for the customer.
Every unnecessary form, delayed response, additional approval, or request to provide the same information twice adds a little more friction to the experience. Individually, those moments may seem insignificant. Collectively, they shape how customers remember your business.
Making it easier to do business doesn’t always require major investments or dramatic changes. Sometimes the greatest improvements come from removing an unnecessary step, communicating more clearly, or responding a little sooner. Those small improvements tell customers something important: their time matters.
Every process, every conversation, and every interaction contributes to the customer’s experience. Businesses rarely lose customers because of one major frustration. More often, they lose them one unnecessary inconvenience at a time.
The next time you become frustrated as a customer, pay attention to why.
Often, the problem isn’t what the company sells. It’s everything they put between you and the solution you need.
If you became your own customer tomorrow morning, what would you change first?
