Smart Interview Techniques for Expanding Your Team

Hiring during a growth phase is exciting and full of potential. However, it also comes with risk. One wrong hire in a quality, regulatory, or technical role can delay production, impact compliance, and affect team performance. That is why interviews should be structured to evaluate both capability and team fit.

Here are four proven interview techniques to help hiring managers in life sciences make stronger, more confident decisions.

1. Scenario-Based Questions

Avoid asking how a candidate would handle a situation. Instead, ask how they have handled it.

For example:
“Tell me about a time you uncovered a compliance issue during a validation run. What steps did you take, and what was the outcome?”

This helps surface real-world behavior, not just textbook responses.

2. Cross-Functional Interviewing

As teams grow, collaboration becomes even more important. Involve colleagues from other departments like Quality, Regulatory, or Engineering during the interview process.

This not only tests communication skills but also ensures the candidate will work well across departments. It also increases internal buy-in and smooths future onboarding.

3. Reverse Interviews

End the interview by asking, “What would you need from your team or leadership to succeed in the first six months?”

This question invites the candidate to share what helps them perform well and offers a glimpse into their work style, expectations, and sense of ownership.

4. Behavior-Based Scorecards

Replace instinct with structure. Identify the key traits the role requires, such as accountability, technical expertise, or communication, and use a simple scorecard to evaluate each candidate consistently.

This adds objectivity, aligns your team’s feedback, and reduces decision fatigue.

Final Thought

Hiring in a growth environment is not just about filling a role. It is about strengthening the team with people who will contribute, collaborate, and evolve with the business. A thoughtful interview process increases your chances of making hires that truly stick.
